Your Plan to Fight the Winter Workout Blahs

It isn't here yet, but I want to be ready.

Firstly, with the arrival of Fall breezes and cool nights, I always feel a desired for comfort foods, or just more food in general. Can you relate, how do you deal?

Secondly, Winter means indoor workouts. And I can see myself getting sick of those...always in the same place, always before sunrise or after sunset...
How to keep it fresh?

Well, I teach skiing in the winter (I live near Lake Tahoe, California). That really helps me from going crazy in the winter. I get to exercise outside in the sun nearly everyday.

The roughest time for me is November. Not enough snow to ski but usually enough to shut down the bike paths. And the early sunsets make it difficult to get out before dark. I'm going to go to Ecuador this November to avoid the problem altogether :-)

I would think there'd be some sort of outdoor exercise opportunities in Nova Scotia (cross country, snow shoeing, ice skating, etc). I guess short days are probably a big problem.

A lot of my co-workers play in a broom-ball league (kinda like hockey but no skates). It's held at an outdoor, illuminated skating rink. It sounds fun and it doesn't require very much equipment or ice skating skills. Maybe something like that is available?

Or perhaps winter could be a good time to learn an indoor sport. Martial arts or raquetball. I'd probably do that if I wasn't skiing.

Ri-i-i-i-ght, winter sports! I forgot that I wanted to play hockey this year! I have never played, but my young son has been playing for 2 years and watching him has sparked an interest in me. The problem is that I have no idea where a zero-experience grown man can play hockey without getting laughed off the ice.

I have the same dilemma in the summer. I want to play roller-hockey but I'm only so-so on skates. The guys that I know that play are all former hockey players. I think I'm gonna have to suck it up and go out and get my ass kicked

First off - I love extreme weather. I've been known to, as recently as this summer, to workout under the sun in 100+ deg F heat. I also did Murph in the rains from hurricane Fay (1 - 2 inches fell during the 30 mins I was in it.)

I say - until it's dangerously cold - get some good base layer clothing and get out in it. I know you probably think it isn't cold here in Alabama, but 35 deg and rain is the norm for the winter. I've lived in Pittsburgh and 10 - 20 deg without the humidity is nowhere near as uncomfortable!

Indoor sports? How about VOLLEYBALL!

Have an indoor pool nearby? Swimming is a great way to deny the cold. It's also an excellent addition to any type of workout.

I think I may be weird, I'm more actives, even outdoors, in the winter.
