Maddog's Log

Postby maddog » Mon Nov 07, 2011 1:49 pm

Some quick background information: I am 20, female-bodied, 5'3", and 106 lb. I went rock climbing and cycling often over summer, but now that it's much colder I find doing these activities less attractive. I'd much rather stay fit without having to leave my warm house. I'm looking to maintain my weight (if I am any lighter, I will be "underweight" BMI) and/or gain some muscle. Three years ago, I used to be able to do 20 pullups at once, but that time is long gone. I have always been pretty bad at pushups. Squats are pretty easy for me and my biggest obstacle squat-wise is flexibility, though I am working on this through daily yoga. On days I don't do simplefit, I do a 30-60 minute session of yoga, do the abripper workout from p90x, or do a bodyweight routine of my choice.

I guessed I would be appropriately challenged by Level Four, and have already done two weeks of it (indicating I probably should have started at two or three), but at this point I just want to keep working on L4 without regressing to L3. Here are my stats so far:

(Level Four)
W1D1 - 19 rounds
W1D2 - 10:29
W1D3 - 10:12

W2D1 - 20 rounds
W2D2 - 9:04
W2D3 - 8:58

W3D1 - 22 rounds

Thanks!

W3D3 - finished in 8:23. I was sure I was going to be slower than last week (8:58) since pullups went so poorly. For some reason, today each one was a fight. Better luck next week, I guess.

Level Four, Week 4, Day One - 23 sets (+1 from last week). I was hoping to do more, but I was pretty sore from a long yoga session yesterday and focused on improving my pushup form instead, since I discovered that I've been doing my pushups with my elbows too far out.

L4,W4,D2
times - 1:15, 1:16, 1:21, 1:16, 1:23
total - 6:31 (-42 seconds!)
I'm totally mystified as to how people get such fast times on day two. Feel like I'm missing something. However this week was a big improvement from last week.

L4,W4,D3 - finished in 7:40. This is -43 seconds from last week! I almost postponed doing D3 till tomorrow, since I only got 6 hours of sleep and didn't get to eat anything between 3pm and 9pm due to my classes. Glad I worked through that though; I feel like I have a chance of passing L4 before the new year.

L4, Week 5, D1. Got in 24 sets (+1 from last week) and had 30 seconds to spare. Not quite enough time to fit in a last round. I feel like my form is much better on all fronts, so despite the tiny improvement I think I'm making good progress.

L4,W5,D2
Times - 1:17, 1:16, 1:16, 1:19, 1:21
Total - 6:29. An improvement of 2 seconds, although I feel like at this point I should be focusing on form instead of speed on day 2, since pushing for time feels like sacrificing correct form. so for next week I'll try and do perfect form on all day 2 sets, even if my time might slow a little.

Nice work! I think that is the right approach to day 2. The clock enforces some discipline, but this is the one day when you can really focus on good form.

L4,W5,D3 - finished at 7:29 (-11 seconds from last week). I felt pretty strong on pullups this week (5/4/3/3/3/2), and now my main obstacle for L4 seems to be pushups. Beyond just getting fatigued, my form fails pretty quickly. I guess I know what to work on, at least.

L4, W6, D1 - Today was a little problematic. I got through 21 full rounds with a consistent pace and good form, but on the last few a small twinge at the outside of my right elbow during push-ups turned into a very concerning sudden pain/popping that kept me from doing any more push-ups, even on my knees. It didn't seem to affect my pulling muscles though, so I did three or four rounds after this with just pull-ups and squats. I'm a little concerned about the elbow, and if it still hurts in a couple days I may go down to level two for the rest of the week in order to avoid making it worse.

L4, W6, D2. I didn't want to bother my elbow so I went slow and steady this week and focused on form. Times were 1:28, 1:28, 1:38, 1:25, 1:29 for a total of 7:28, almost a full minute more than last week. But I'd rather be slow than injured!

L4, W6, D3. Pullups were even easier than last week (6/5/3/2/2/2) but push-ups gave me a lot of trouble. Squats were a breeze and I went through the whole 41 without a pause. Final time was 7:21, which is only -8 seconds from last week. If it weren't for my push-up issues, L4 would have been over long ago. So frustrating!

I now weigh 103lb, which is a decrease of three from when I started simplefit six weeks ago. I'm not trying to lose weight, but between a college budget and my 95% vegan diet, I have to make a conscious effort to get enough calories to maintain weight/gain muscle. I'm not too concerned though, since I will be spending a couple weeks at home over the holidays, and my family's cooking is too delicious not to stuff myself at every meal!

L4, W7, D1 - got in 25 rounds, which is +4 from last week and +1 from my previous PR. That means I did 50 pullups! Woo! I'm pretty surprised at this result since I had a bad cold over the weekend that is just starting to fade in severity.
