I ran my first 5k

Post by goodluckfox » Tue Aug 07, 2007 5:23 pm

Well, "ran" is an awfully strong word. But I completed it. It is now my new benchmark. I am bailing on the couch-to-5k running plan, since I'm having trouble running for more than 2 or 3 minutes at a time.

When I FIRST start off, I can manage 5 minutes at a stretch, but from then on, i just can't seem to repeat it. So, I can only do it once. So far.

3 miles/4 laps/5 kilometers

My time was 45:48. A leisurely 15 minute mile. But at least I finished. I even sprinted on the last bit. :)

Maybe I really really should try waking up EARLY in the morning, and using that time as well. Might halp me get in shape that much faster.

Hi

Thats interesting, I actually tried the couch to 5k program twice, late last year and a couple of years ago. Both times I got to the 3 min runs ok but couldn't seem to progress past that and gave up  Running just never seems to get easier for me, and I wasn't having fun.

You are going to keep running though right? Maybe a rest week from running might help?

Good luck with it!

Thanks, Aussiechick. ;)

Yeah, I plan on keeping running. Simplefit is making me stronger and giving me muscles (ME of all people! With a chest!), and I think that the running is shrinking my belly.

I don't know what is up with the 3 minute barrier. I think it's mental. I believe that my body has the capability of doing the job, but the problem is that my mind is getting drug along for the ride as an unwilling participant. I don't think my body is bothered very much by the pain and fatigue, but my mind is like "Noooo! Wanna STOP!!!!! THIS SUCKS!!!!!!" So my brain is doing all SORTS of bargaining, trying to get me to stop with the running and just walk. "We'll make it up later... c'mon, just run to the next mailbox and then we can start walking again, okay? What's the rush?" That sort of thing.

I've probably mentioned this before, but I hate running. I especially hate the looong runs. So when I used to run, I would do hill sprints. Find a suitable hill and run up it as quick as I could, then walk back down. Repeat ad pukie.

I think I need to start doing hill sprints again.

A trick I use if my body is screaming at me to stop while I'm running: slow down. Sometimes just dropping the pace down, even to the point where you're barely shuffling along and grandmas with walkers are keeping up to you, can get you through that mental barrier. As long as you're still running... Eventually you'll get to the point where your body stops worrying about the fact that it's running and your mind drifts off onto other things, just chugging along at a comfortable pace. The zen of running; I reckon it is running's ability to get you to this state of mind that gets those nutcap ultramarathoners addicted. You'll get there!

Did you do anything different from last week?

I bought pushup grips, which have slowed down my pushups. I was about a minute slower this week. Spread across 5 rounds, that's 12 seconds slower on each round. That means my pushups are about 2/3 of a second slower using the pushup grips, but I think I get more out of the pushup with them. I'm certainly more comfortable, and going through a larger range of motion and further distance.

Yeah, I noticed the time difference, which is why I asked. I've never tried grips, but I see how they can slow you down.

Try rings for push ups if you like pain :) , but watch the range of motion, don't want to hose your rotator cuff or labrum.

Triied running. Was feeling pretty defeated before I even started since my boatbuilding project isn't going according to plan.

Running is mental more than it is physical I think.

I couldn't run anymore, but I determed that I would at least WALK the rest of the 5k.

I couldn't even do that; I lost a huge chunk of my vision to a dim blue blob with green trim... must've ruptured a blood vessel in my eye or something.

I stopped with 1 lap to go, figuring that in the off chance that i'm dying of an aneurysm, I should do it at home rather than on the street with no identification on me.

Aren't you in Jackson MS?

The high temp here in N. Alabama was 103 today. The heat index was near 110. At 6:00 PM the temp was 99. I am only going to and from building and vehicle. The grass is dead ( ) so I have no reason to be outside.

You people who are in the cooler climes - this is when we get cabin fever down here.

Yeah. It's like running through a nice hot bowl of soup.

The jokes are flying around here.

"Want some hot cocoa?"

"BBBBRRRRRR"

"Looks like we gonna need to order some firewood..."

OMG
