pb_zeppelin's goals & fitness log

Postby pb_zeppelin » Mon Apr 16, 2012 4:35 pm

Current:
* Male, 30 years old
* 5' 8"
* 182 lbs, ~19.5% body fat (electronic scale reading, not sure how accurate... but a baseline)
* Consecutive pullups/chinups: ~5
* Consecutive pushups: ~35

Goals:
* Weight: 165 lbs, 12-14% body fat (on the same scale). I'm less concerned about absolute weight than the bf %.
* Consecutive pullups/chinups: 15 [I find chinups (palms facing me) easier, I'm using them below. I'll try again with pullups later on.]
* Consecutive pushups: 60

I found SimpleFit via reddit -- really like the simplicity and the warmth on the boards. I checked out cheapo's progress (here, and on Mark's Daily Apple) and was really impressed! I've tried p90x and some other programs before, but found them difficult to stick to. Simplefit is so minimalist, you can't really say no.

My background: I was a skinny kid (125 lbs in high school), filled out in college (155 lbs), and slowly gained weight in my 20s (160, 165, 170, 175, 180, 189 at my max a few months ago). I'm in OK shape, have been doing martial arts (karate/jiu jitsu) since high school, eat ok (don't drink soda, eat chips, etc., but will mindlessly chomp on whatever is in front of me so I have to watch out... I've gone through a bag of baby carrots without realizing). As a kid I loved doing pullups because I was so light... now, not so much! I'd like to remember that feeling if just a little bit. In my head, doing more than 10 pullups means I'm "Fit again". If I can do 15 (or even 20!) I'd basically be at my high school level. Not sure if that's possible but I'll give it a shot :).

I started SimpleFit last week, here's my stats:

* 4/10/12: Level 1 Day 1 (L1D1): 41 rounds in 20 mins. [41 pullups, 82 pushups, 123 squats]

* 4/12/12: L1D2: 3:39 [kept good form]

* 4/14: L1D3: 1:52 [good form, 4-3-3 on pullups, 10 pushups / 21 squats in a row]

Based on the test, I decided to try level 3 this week:

* 4/16: L3D1: 28 rounds (2/3/5). Kept good form, some kipping in pullups. 56 pullups, 84 pushups. 140 squats

So far, so good! It's amazing to think you can do that much work in 20 minutes. I'm concentrating on taking good rests between sets (15-30 seconds between each) to keep a steady pace. I try to avoid looking at the stopwatch.

Anyway, this is the first part of my journey. Looking forward to it!

Thanks!

Just finished up Week 3. 16 pullups for the test burned me out!

4/18: L3D2 (3/8/13) = 15 pullups, 40 pushups, 65 squats

0:43
0:35
0:35 [guess]
0:39
0:38

190 seconds = 3:10 [not counting rests]

4/20: L3D3 (16/33/33): 4:07. 5-3-3-3-2 for pullups [was wiped at end], 20-10-3 pushups, 33 squats

Finished my first week of Level 4. Was tough, I'll be here another week at least.

4/23: L4D1 (2/4/6): 26 rounds. wiped at end. set personal goal for 25 rounds.

4/25: L4D2 (4/12/20): 20 pullups, 60 pushups, 100 squats, 0:58, 0:58, 0:57, 0:57, 0:56 = 4:46

4/27: L4D3 (20/41/41): 5:22 [6-3-3-2-2-2-2 pullups, 20-13-8 pushups, 41 squats]. The time between the sets of pullups got me. I didn't want to push till failure.

Finished 2nd week of Level 4. Similar numbers to before, will need another week at least.

5/1: L4D1 [repeating level 4, 2/4/6): 26 rounds. Tired but not totally wiped. better form on pull-ups, very little kipping.

5/3: L4D2 (4/12/20): 20 pullups, 60 pushups, 100 squats. 0:51, 0:52, 0:54, 0:53, 0:56 => 4:26 (took 30s-1m breaks in between)

5/5: L4D3: [5-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-1 pull-ups, 26-10-6 pushups, 41 squats]. 5m20s. Lots of small pull-up sets, need to remove these to advance.

Yes! Finished up 3rd week of Level 4, ready for level 5. That's going to be challenging.

5/8: L4D1 (2/4/6). 27 rounds. Good form for pull-ups (no kipping) and pushups. Felt better paced, could have done 28 perhaps.

5/10: L4D2: 0:49, 0:51, 0:51, 0:50, 0:49 = 4:12
Pullups good form, really high up (chest to bar).

5/12: L4D3: 4:41 [5-3-2-2-2-2-2-2 pullups, 30-5-6 pushups, 41 squats]. Lost of small pull-up sets, but less rest time between (~5 seconds).

First round of week 5. Will be here for a while.

5/15: L5D1: (3/5/8): 20 rounds. spaced out pretty well. pull-ups the limiting factor. 60 pullups/100 pushups/160 squats.

5/18: L5D2 (5/15/26). (5:44 total, rounds were 1:05, 1:15, 1:13, 1:10, 1:01). 25 pullups, 75 pushups, 130 squats.

5/20: L5D3 (test 26/51/51): 7:25. Pullups were killer: 5-4-3-2-2... and a 3. Pushups: 20-10-5-6-10. Squats: 30-21.
