Hi all,

I'm a 35-year old male, and although I've been active in the martial arts for the last six years, I've sort of dropped out of shape in the last two years following the birth of our youngest son and my wife's birth-induced illness. She's a lot better now, and I've started to focus a bit more on my own fitness. I registered here a bit over a week ago, but decided to hold off starting until we were back from vacation.

As a lot of others here I struggle with the pull-ups. I've never had much upper-body strength, and I weigh just below 100 Kg so there's a lot of me to lift :-) I've been doing some informal grease-the-groove by hanging from the second floor landing everytime I go up and down the stairs at home, but I'm still not quite there.

I did L1D1 yesterday. My goal was to complete 15 rounds, subbing jumping pull-ups 3:1. Warm-up was a 7K bike-ride with a real steep hill in the middle to cook my legs a bit, as I suspect ed the squats to be a bit easy. I was right about that!

The first two rounds went fine in about 1.20 with good form, and I thought, piece of cake.... Yeah right. I was soon gasping and my arms were crying every time they caught the pull-up bar. In the end I finished 16 rounds, but jumping pull-ups became me hanging from the bar for 3x5seconds for the last 8 or so rounds! Push-ups went well, with form slipping a bit at the end, and squats were dead easy. Next time I'll have to see about bringing a rope or something, and do body-rows instead!

so: L1D1: 16 rounds (sort of) in 20:02

This place is SO not a bunch of jocks. :) Everyone's really nice and encouraging.

Yeah, definitely do body rows instead. It becomes a lot more clear what's a rep and what's a failure.

May I recommend Cool Running's Couch to 5k Running Plan to you? Like the simplefit level progression, it has levels as well. I do my simplefit workout on mon-wed-fri, and I do the running on sun-tue-thu. http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

That way, I'm a lot more active, I reckon I burn more calories, keep my metabolism going, and I work on my endurance and stamina. I'm almost 35 myself.

Thanks for the recommendation, but I absolutely abhor running, and have done ever since...., well forever. I like the bike a bit better so I'll stick to that for now.

I just don't like running, because when I do it, I always seem to get attacked by crows. No joke.

Seriously Tonia, crows? I've been attacked by seagulls, ducks, geese and angry little sparrows, but never crows?

Crows are BIG... that'd be scary.

I'd pay good money to see taifun and the angry little sparrows tho. :)

I think Aussiechick prolly winds for ill-tempered fauna, however. That whole damn continent is deadly venemous.

Eh, nearly a daily occurrence, I have at least two nests up under the roof of my house, plus a couple in nearby buildings. They seem to think I'm their tenant....

Back to getting fit: I'm planning to do L1D2 later tonight, even though I'm still a bit sore from day 1. Depends though on whether the missus gets home at a reasonable hour. If not, I'll do it tomorrow.

Edit: L1D2: 6:45 excluding breaks. Did shorter than three-minutes breaks because I felt good. Subbed body rows from a steel bar about solar plexus height, which worked well enough. The bar was a little thick though.

This one was definately easier than day 1, but I still got a good workout. The body rows are lots better as a full body workout than just hanging from a bar!

Well, a lot less sore today than after day one, but I'd forgotten how badly my head reacts to working out late at night. I've had a major headache all day. Gotta get things done earlier in the evening.
