Ack! Crick in theneck!

I woke up this mornign with a HORRIBle crick in my neck! :( :( :(

If this keeps up I'm not going to be able to do ANYTHING tonight. :(

A bit of googling about told me that I've sprained a ligament in my neck, rather than done damage to a muscle, so a massage or th elike isn't going to help ;\.. What I read said to avoid stretching it, and give the i\tissues time to not be inflamed, and heal. Maybe heat up a towel and let it sit on my shoulders.

Anyone else got any ideas?

I always use ICE for soft tissue stuff 20 minutes at a time as often as possible

I always heard that a common cause of a "crick" in the neck in the AM is from sleeping with a wet head - like a shower right before bed.

Maybe an old wives' tale?

Ice and Ibuprofen. Got a massager?

I had that after a workout in my first few weeks... massaged it, took it easy, and it cleared up after a week or so if I remember correctly. Have to check my log early on, I probably noted it.

Agreed heat can increase inflammation and often make things worse, ice will reduce inflammatory flush all liquid out of the area which will be replaced by fresh blood in the area when the ice is removed.

What did you do to sprain the ligaments in your neck? If you don't know then I would suspect something else. I've sprained ligaments in my ankle and knee before and the pain was immediate. I used to suffer bad cricks in my neck, but I knew what the problem was. A crooked spine from years of sitting at a desk hunched over. And if I slept wrong I would be in misery the next morning. I was too cheap to go to a chicropractor, so I looked on the web for a solution. First, I thought of trying acupressure. I was shocked when it actually worked. Google "neck pain acupressure". I use the spot designated LI4. It doesn't solve the problem but it did give me some immediate relief. To straighten my back I lay on a carpeted floor and relax. If doing this causes your back to start knotting up, then it is crooked for sure. I relax to the point I can loose the curve in my lower back so that my spine in completely flat. Then I bend my knees up as if I was going to be doing sit-ups, but with knees together. Keeping my knees together and back flat, I roll my knees to the right, then the left as far I can. For me, everytime I go to the right I get a pop, like cracking a knuckle. When I stand up, the crick is gone and I have full range of motion and no more pain. Also, a hot shower on the neck helps a lot. This is what I do and it works for me. IF, this is your problem also, give it a try.
