And soy is a goitrogen (can mess with your thyroid)

Cucurbitacins are the bitter property. Or it might have just been picked a long time ago. I know my persian friends soak their bitter vegetables in salty warm water for and hour or two before they cook with them.

Thanks for the insight I will try and soak them next time and see how they come out.

    Question:

    Fruit Juice and Alcohol?

What’s the best way to have these on the Paleo Diet?

    Also Cheat Days?

Any such thing on the Paleo? Dairy & Bread are calling my name.

    ha!! fruit and alcohol!

Fruit juice is high sugar low fiber. It spikes ones insulin just like table sugar. Better to eat the whole fruit: fiber, phytochemical nutrients, antioxidants.

Alcohol: 9 cal / g (protein has 4, carbs have 4 and fats have 7). Of course we all like to indulge. Vodka is the purest. Beer is made from grains. Probs with EOH are high calorie, tend to drink it late in the day before bed with no time to work it off (gets stored as fat), and of course the consquences that come after the liquid courage effects.

    Those are my thoughts…

Cheat days are up to you. It’s always your choice. I don’t know what to say, it’s your perogative.

    ok back to the books!

    hope it helps!

Well I think I can do without fruit juice. As for alcohol… :? Well i’ve been staying away from beer been sticking to wine. I enjoy vodka so that should be easy enough. 😉 Cheat days I’ll have to play by ear its only been a week so I’m not too worried yet. Thanks again.

What about smoothies? They have more of the flesh in with the juice.

I don’t drink alcohol at all anymore. If I did – I’d drink a glass of wine with a meal now and then. I have found through a lot of experimenting 😉 that I don’t have that luxury. One glass = 2 bottles for me.

    Doesn’t alcohol metabolize as sugar?

Tonia – you probably can answer this…

What was I supposed to be answering?

Oh yes the metabolism of alcohol (EOH).

I have to admit that I had to dig deep into my grey matter slash my first year biochemistry text book (Champ PC, Harvey RA. Biochemistry. 2nd ed. Philadelphia: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins; 1994.) for this one.

I think I made a mistake earlier, my bad:

    CHO, PROTEIN: 4 kcal/g

    FAT: 9kcal/g

    EOH: 7kcal/g

Ok on to the meat of it:

So alcohol is processed in the liver in a two step reaction and we end up with acetate. These two reactions produce a bunch of energy carrying molecules that shunt the system away from gluconeogenesis (glucose production). I’m extrapolating that this means that the molecules are shunted down the storage pathwa – CRAP! I need to go… a string of really bad luck … might continue later…might not…

    AHH!!!
