I began the exercises today with level 4, day 1, doing nine rounds in 20 minutes. When I compared my log to others, I see that they are doing substantially more rounds. Does this mean I began on too high of a level and should drop down?

yes, i think you are starting a lvl or two too high. ideally you should be able to do in the region of 20 rounds in 20 mins, i.e. 1 round/min. although that is just a guideline, 9 rounds are way to few.
before you continue with D2, first determine on which lvl you should start. for your next WOD, do L2D1 and see how many rounds you can accomplish.
The 5 rounds took me 10 min. 33 sec. Afterward I realized that I didn’t take the 3 minute rests between rounds and the time above includes the rest I did take. I should’ve read the detailed explanation earlier!
That said, it was tough but in a good way and I’m looking forward to day 3!
