Re: JK's log
During the week ending 4/21/14, I crossed the 5 min barrier and technically moved to L5. But I stayed at L4 for two reasons:
1. I need to use fist pushups. (bought push up bars)
2. I am going to do the real pullups without modification. I bought a doorway pull up bar.
Starting next week, I am going to focus on pull ups and move the pull ups slowly from L1 to L4. I am going to do a hybrid plan of L4.1, L4.2, L4.3, L4.4 with push ups and squats at L4 but pull ups starting from L1.

Re: JK's log
Week 49(Week 1 of L4.1) ending 5/8/14
(push up bar and pull up bar. L1 of pullups and L4 of others)
L4D1: 35rds (not pull up bar), L4.1D2: 06:23, L4.1D3: 08:28
Pull ups: 4 (0:36), 1 (0:58), 1 (1:19), 1 (1:56), 1 (2:51), 1 (3:22), 1 (3:55)
Push ups: 18 (0:45),(5,4,3) (1:02),(3,3,2,2,1) (1:26), (total: 3:13)
Squats: 41 (01:19)
I have a long way to go for pull ups. Push ups too got adversely affected. I am hoping to cross L4.1 in one month.

Good job man! Have you ever used the iron woody bands for your pullups before? They come in many different levels that can help you with pullups if its a sticking point. Just a suggestion.

Re: JK's log
Thanks for the suggestion. If I can't do at least one pull up, that bands would be appropriate. Since I am able to do more than 1, my plan is to slowly reduce the rest time between sets of 1.

Re: JK's log
Week 50 (Week 2 of L4.1) ending 5/15/14
(push up bar and pull up bar. L1 of pullups and L4 of others)
L4.1D1: 25rds, L4.1D2: 06:00, L4.1D3: 06:48
Pull ups: 4 (0:22), 2 (0:24), 1 (0:28), 1 (0:18), 1 (0:17), 1 (0:21), (total 2:10)
Push ups: 20 (0:44),(5,4,3) (1:16),(3,3,2,2) (1:14), (total: 3:14)
Squats: 41 (01:23)
On D1: after the first 10 rounds, I started taking more time and even then in the later rounds I was not getting my chin above the bar. I still counted them
On D2: I was able to do the first 5 rounds pretty easily with 3 min rest in between. I could only do 3 or 4 rounds of pull ups in the next 5 rounds.
On D3: some of the 10 pull ups, I could not get my chin above the bar. I could do a second round with pull ups. But the third round, I did only push ups and squats.
In any case, there is definitely a big improvement in the D3 time.

Week 51 (Week 3 of L4.1) ending 5/22/14
L4.1D1: 27rds, L4.1D2: 05:53, L4.1D3: 06:13
Pull ups: 5 (0:27), 2 (0:25), 1 (0:22), 1 (0:23), 1 (0:29) (total 2:06)
Push ups: 21 (0:43),(5,4,3) (1:02),(3,3,2,1) (1:01), (total: 2:46)
Squats: 41 (01:20)
On D1: after about 15 rounds, I couldn't get chin up the bar, just my forehead
On D2: did 10 rounds with 3 mins rest in between.
On D3: after 7 pull ups, I could only get my forehead above the bar. I could do three rounds of D3 though.
I will probably take another month to cross L1 of pullups.

Re: JK's log
I love the hybrid plan. The pull ups are darn difficult and slow to build up. It seems like I built up my push ups in the first year and now I am building up my pull ups. Legs are being sacrificed. I reached L4 squats six months ago and I don't foresee moving beyond L4 for another year the way pull ups are progressing. Prior to simple fit, I never did pull ups or push ups so this amount of progress, even if it was so slow, feels remarkable to me. I bought tight T-shirts for the first time showing off my muscles and my family is laughing at me saying those shirts are for teenagers not for 40+

Re: JK's log
Haha I like the tight tshirts part. Maybe since your legs are staying on the same level you could do a small amount of running for just a little extra conditioning if you have the time.
Re: JK's log
Yup, pull ups are just crazy hard, they sure do pay off though. Wear your t-shirt with pride
